Part of my Final year work is focused on Autism and issues people on the spectrum have, i am bringing that knowledge and information into this project to boost along the emotive design so it really does what Heaney did with his writing, put the reader in the situation, i dont want this project just to be a sad little animated short, i want this to really tell the loss of a small child and how it shook many including a now famous 12 year old to the core i want to attempt to shake the viewers emotions.
I will do this through portraying some sensory issues similar to the overdrive experiences above, not as drastic though.
I looked into the stages of grief, PTSD and shock, all of which sensory overdrive can come into play, and as most that has suffered a loss could tell, you are in a state of blur, everything is so shocking and extreme because you are zoned out and still processing what has happened. I believe a child, especially a small town country boy already trying to adjust to being away from home in an alien place like a big scary school in the city would already be tense, the news of his brothers death couldve sent young Seamus over the edge and everything wouldve been a shock to him.
I dont believe he was old enough to deal with the situation and school, he and his family have said on countless occasions how close they all were so its safe to assume he took it hard when his young brother tragically died.
Seamus does speak very briefly about his brothers death but is still even until the end very conservative about the whole situation, which makes me believe it is an extremely sore topic and never properly dealt with, i will be keeping all of this in mind during character design and story development to portray that better than a plain funeral, but a funeral which is shadowed and confusing, ie. through a childs unknowing eyes, a loss of innocence essentially.
A couple of small examples of my character and emotive design process.
